Framing lives in the shadow zone
Framing isn’t about the pitch down the middle or the one in the dirt — every umpire gets those right. It’s decided in the shadow zone, the ring of borderline locations around the edge of the plate where a call could honestly go either way. That’s why this report separates shadow-zone pitches from the obvious ones: a catcher gets credit for the strikes they actually influenced, not for calls anyone would have received.
Measuring that requires two things a bullpen can’t give you: real called pitches and precise locations. That’s why the framing report is built from Trackman or Yakkertech game CSVs — every called ball and strike in the file is plotted against the zone, and the catcher’s called-strike rate on borderline pitches is converted into a framing-runs estimate.
The output is built for player development, not just evaluation: a zone map showing exactly where your catcher is winning and losing calls, game by game. Stack a few weeks of reports and you can see whether the receiving work in practice is actually showing up on Friday night.
